Get Out was written and directed by Jordan Peele. The movie came to theaters in 2017 and was a huge hit. Chris Washington, the movie's main character, played by Daniel Kaluuya, decided to meet his girlfriend's family for the first time... but it wasn't long until things got weird... then nightmarish. If you haven't heard of the movie, check out the trailer below. A full plot can be found on Wikipedia.
With that said, why are we talking about the movie in this blog? Well, if you didn't catch the scene, the purpose of life is briefly discussed by one of the villains, Dean Armitage. However, Chris who is obviously distressed and scared doesn't appear to want any part of the philosophical pondering. See the dialogue below.
Dean Armitage: What is your purpose... Chris?
Chris Washington: What?
Dean Armitage: In life, what is your purpose?
Chris Washington: Right now... its finding those keys.
Dean Armitage: Fire, its a reflection of our own mortality. We're born, we breathe, and we die.
Chris Washington: Rose?
Dean Armitage: Even the sun will die some day. But we are the divine, we are the Gods trapped in cocoons.
This isn't the first time in this blog we've seen a villain discuss the purpose (or meaning) of life in relation to God or being God. Recall the Legion post. Similarly to Legion, the villain in Get Out also is drunk with power.
We rate the movie:
Overall - 10
Meaning of Life Relevance - 2
Uniqueness – 10
What did we miss? If you saw the movie, what did you think?
